The GSMA’s Mobile World Congress 2012 will be held from 27th February to 1st March 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. DataWind’s innovative solution at breakthrough pricing was chosen from six hundred applicants, and the recognition validates the critical need to break the affordability barrier for devices and network access in bridging the digital divide for the next 3 billion internet users. Datawind has also been recently awarded the prestigious Young Turks Award for Innovation by CNBC and Mercedes Benz and Smart UK Project finalist.

In recognition of all the hard work they have put in in the venture, Raja Singh and Suneet Singh Tuli have been awarded the Technology Achievement Award by the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce in a glittering ceremony held at the Metro Toronto Convention Center.

The Aakash tablet has already become a household name in the tech world, which can be attributed to the painstaking efforts on part of the Tuli brothers, Raja Singh Tuli and Suneet Singh Tuli. In recognition of all the hard work they have put in in the venture, Raja Singh and Suneet Singh Tuli have been awarded the Technology Achievement Award by the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce in a glittering ceremony held at the Metro Toronto Convention Center.

The founders of the Datawind, the company that manufactures the Aakash and the Ubislate 7+ tablets devices, the Tuli brothers were lauded for their strong leadership skills and their exemplary record of innovation. Both the Tuli brothers have been involved in a number of successful business ventures over the past twenty years that have ended up in successful initial public offerings on the Nasdaq stock market. Many products have also been recognized by the Guinness book of records while Raja Tuli himself has, to his credit, close to 5 dozen patents in the field of imaging, communications, and internet technologies.

“We are honored to be recognized; it is a great validation of our vision, giving us the boost to persevere against significant odds in our mission to democratize the Internet by making it affordable for billions around the world,” said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of DataWind.

Datawind is not new to awards and felicitations, having been elected as the UK’s most innovative mobile company by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), among many other awards as well.

The award was presented by Canadian Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Joseph Oliver, and ICCC President Satish Thakkar.

So after all the hard work, it’s time for the Tuli brothers to bask in the glory of the Aakash tablet’s success. Although hard figures aren’t available to tell just how many of the Aakash tablet PCs have been shipped, the recent award goes to show their commitment to the venture and their zeal to bring low cost mobile computing to the masses.

The competition run by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), began its search for UK’s most innovative mobile company in November 2011. The winner was announced at Mobile World Congress at Barcelona this week.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is a government department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy.

DataWind has developed and manufactured the $35 Android powered Aakash tablet.

Montreal based Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of DataWind said, “We are honoured to be recognised; it is a great validation of our vision and I hope this will help create greater impetus for UK innovation.”

Russell Buckley, one of the Smart UK Project judges, said, “We were very impressed by the quality of all the finalists, it was a tough decision but we are very pleased that DataWind has won the Smart UK Project 2012. There is a global potential and the will to transform lives and society, all using the resources of a British company.”

DataWind, has also been named among world’s Top 50 most innovative companies by Fast Company.

Aakash which is an Android device with a 7-inch touchscreen, 3-hour battery life, and 32 GB of storage is available starting at $35 for students.

The Indian government plans to purchase and give away 100,000 units in the first run to schoolchildren and hopes to purchase 50 lakh tablets this year.

Datawind manufactured the world’s cheapest tablet in India, ‘Aakash,’ in collaboration with the government of India.

“It is a great acknowledgment for the incredible hard work our team has put in. While naysayers believed this was impossible, and could not be done by Indians, we’re proud to have made it possible with a made in India product,” said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, Datawind.

As the world moves to knowledge based economies, India is at a distinct disadvantage with only 4% of its population having active access to the internet.

“Datawind has recently started online booking of the Aakash and Ubislate 7 + tablets. In less than 20 days, 20 lakh tablets were booked by people from all parts of India. These are all individual buyers,” added Tuli.
